Why networking matters

Hello Power BI fans, hope you’re having a great week so far! I’ve been a bit busy myself, improving on my video editing skills while keeping up with the upload schedule; if you watch my recent video last Wednesday you will notice some changes which I hope will make them more interesting!

This week, what’s on my mind is really all about networking; I think it has a lot of great benefits like building business relationships, get fresh ideas or perspectives, and even potentially find work opportunities. I’ll let you in on a little secret.. I’m practically an introvert. Not that I’m unable to communicate or attend public events, but in a sense that my natural tendencies is to be indoors, at home. This is why this YouTube really works for me, everything can be done on my desk. I recognise that while networking is hard for me, I should make an effort to do it anyway. A bit cheesy but here’s a short quote from Theodore Roosevelt that really resonates to me;

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty”

Enough about me, here are a few things I wanted to cover today;

⚡Report of the Week

Check out this report by Gustaw Dudek. his report design stood out to me as clean with tons of insights but not cluttered at the same time, using so many dynamic filters and slicers that lets users discover the data for themselves. Here are a few things I liked about it:

  • The ability to change pick and choose which metrics, granularity, highlights and chart types give users the ability to see so many different variations of the same chart

  • Navigational buttons that “react” i.e. pop out on hover gives this report an app-like feel and immediately lets users know those are buttons to interact with

  • I really like this metric breakdown on the right, which uses field parameters allowing you to choose what you want to compare against.

🤝 Community Updates

This week I’ve been actively trying to look for events to participate in; both online or in-person so I’m going to list a few that I found so far, in case you’re interested!

Enterprise DNA Summit (21-23rd February 2023) - This one is hosted by Enterprise DNA, they’re quite well-known for holding Power BI challenges and other things within the community. I saw that its soon and its free so I thought I’d sign up and let you all know how it goes!

Global Power BI Summit (7-8th March 2023) - A multi-day event with some really well-known folk within the Power BI community. This does cost $99 so I’m still having second thoughts as I normally don’t pay to attend events, but we’ll see!

Community Challenges - If you’re interested in testing your skills against others within the community, joining challenges is a great to have a set objective and other incentives, here are a few you can think of joining

  • FP20 Challenge - Join the group and participate in this challenge, will end on the 28th Feb

  • Workout Wednesdays - Their challenge this week is all about non-linear regressions using Deneb, have a go at it yourself

Power BI February 2023 Feature Summary is OUT!

Since January was pretty quite for features, February is jam packed different interesting things to cover so for sure I’ll cover this as a video so I can sink my teeth into these details. For now, a few outstanding features to highlight would be:

Read the full blog post here, or keep an eye out for a video where I cover these in more detail.

🎥 New Videos from Us

How to create a Drill Button - This video is a pretty interesting take on drilldowns / drillthroughs because it uses a button to make it accessible and obvious for your users that this option is available

How to design eye-catching tables - Here I summarise some of the features and formatting options you can use to add some extra flair to your tables, which are usually the most boring visual available to you.
