FREE Microsoft Certification with Microsoft Build
Hello Power BI fans 👋
Hope you’re all having a great weekend, it’s good to be back writing these newsletters again, I’ve missed a few weeks due to personal circumstances and a few bank holidays that I had to take advantage of.
Last week we celebrated the coronation of King Charles III, it’s a pretty big deal here in the UK, so much so that they’ve given us an extra bank holiday. I’m not much of a royal fan but the extra bank holiday was much appreciated. Anyway, enough of my rambling, let’s do a roundup of what’s been happening the past few weeks!
📰 News and Updates
Microsoft Build is here! - This is an annual event hosted by Microsoft where they talk about the future of Microsoft products. One very nice incentive of this event are Cloud Skills Challenges, which if you complete in time, will make you eligible for a free Microsoft Exam. Register here and get your free exam!
Configure Power BI Tabs in Teams - The Power BI team has announced a new update that extends the way you can use Power BI within Teams. When you create tabs in teams, you can now paste various Power BI “items” like reports, paginated reports, scorecards and organisational apps. An interesting thing I found is that you can create “default” views in these tabs so your users can get the slice of data they need with less effort. Check out the blog post to learn more.
Better Integration with OneDrive and SharePoint - This feature essentially allows you to preview Power BI reports directly from either OneDrive or SharePoint folders. So in the same way you can preview excel sheets, you can now also do this with PBIX files. Just note that this is apparently still a pre-preview and it will be available in the coming weeks.
🤝Community Updates
London Power BI Users Group AMA - This is a local event (23rd May) happening next door to me so I plan to attend in person, if you’d like to meet some cool folks come and join us!
Maven Northwind Challenge - New challenge set by Maven Analytics which runs until 11th June. Participating in challenges is a great way to build your portfolio, practice your skills and a chance to win an annual membership with the Maven platform. There are so many reasons to attend so get involved!
FP20 Mobile Phone Sales Challenge - This is a challenge set by Federico Pastor and is a challenge to analyse sales data and answer key business questions. The requirements mimic real life scenarios very closely so participating is a great way to learn. The challenge closes at midnight 15th May so there is still time if you’re up for it!
⚡ Report of the Week
Have you seen this report by Stefano Ciurlia?
It’s submitted as part of the Maven Analytics Challenge (which I also participated in) and I can appreciate this simplistic approach towards a more article-like static report.
🎥 New Videos from Us
Subtitle Ideas - Here’s a video rounding up some of the possible ways you can use subtitles in Power BI to tell your stories in a more meaningful way, both dynamic and static.
Create Custom Visuals with SVG - Did you know there is a simply trick to create custom visuals directly within your default tables in Power BI? Check it out here

It’s a video I created that fully covers every aspect of the Ob Object Interaction feature as it was when it released.
